Outbound restrictions

The following caller types are blocked for outbound calls:

  • Anonymous calling numbers
  • Unallocated +61 numbers not assigned by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
  • Invalid international number formats
  • Special service numbers (13, 1300, 1800, 1900) cannot be used as outbound caller IDs

Calls originating from Australian numbers to Australian destinations must be made by users located in Australia and use the Sydney edge location to prevent international gateway transit, which carriers may block. As of November 30, 2021, Telstra enforces caller ID validation; calls to Telstra subscribers must use a provisioned Australian phone number.

  • Geographic routing: Domestic calls that originate from Australian calling numbers to Australian destinations must use the Sydney edge location. Routing through an international gateway may result in carriers blocking the call.
